Pope Francis announced plans to attend a feast initiated by 13th century pope Celestine V, who himself retired after only a few short months on the job. His plans coupled with a recent knee surgery in May, fueled rumors the pope may retire due to health. These are only rumors, however if he were to retire, joining Pope Benedict XVI, it will be the first time in history that three living Popes exist. Pope Benedict XVI retired citing failing health, becoming only the second Pope in the history of the Catholic Church to retire.
Pope Celestine V known as the hermit pope, was the first Pope to retire. He lived as a hermit observing a strict exitance of solitude. The celebrity status within the Papacy had him longing to return to his humble life. Celestine V was later imprisoned by his successor for fears of being a potential antichrist figure. Celestine V died in prison, however his rule allowing for retirement of living Popes was left standing by his successor.
The issue that arises with a retired living Pope is his largely the undefined role within the Church. Instituting reforms, defining a role for living retired Popes is amongst goals Pope Francis still seeks to accomplish.
