50 people dead following an armed attack on St. Francis Catholic Church
Armed attackers stormed a Catholic Church in Oso, Nigeria. They began shooting indiscriminately immediately upon arrival both outside and inside the Church. At least 50 people are confirmed dead.
Unlike the northern region of Nigeria, more constantly under siege by armed groups, attacks in southwestern Nigeria are relatively rare. The attackers reportedly carried military grade weapons and detonated an explosive devise. Men, women and children were among the dead although total fatalities have not been confirmed.
Authorities urged citizens not to take matters into their own hand in retaliatory attacks. Authorities have yet to identify the group or organization behind the attacks.
